tab is a one-person, self-hosted project. this page says plainly what happens to your data — no legal team, just the truth.
what's collected: your username and a salted password hash (never the password itself), plus what you put in the app — group names, the names of people you add, expense descriptions, amounts, dates, notes, who paid, who owes, settlements you record, and who you're friends with.
what that means: tab holds a record of money moving between you and the people you split with. It's ordinary, but it is personal — treat it the way you'd treat a shared notebook of who owes what.
where it lives: on a single server I run and pay for. There are no analytics, trackers, ad networks, third-party fonts or scripts, and the pages load nothing from another domain. If you enable notifications, tab sends encrypted notification content to your browser's push service so it can deliver it to your device. This can include an expense description, amount, group name, and daily balance totals. The server stores your device's push subscription until you turn notifications off or delete your account.
who can see it: the people in your groups, the friends you've accepted, and me, as the person operating the server — the same as any self-hosted app. A group is reachable only with its invite code, and a friend ledger only by the two people in it.
cookies: the tab_session login cookie keeps you signed in to Tab. With shared DakshHQ
accounts, a second secure cookie also opens sibling apps. Nothing for tracking or advertising. Your light/dark
choice is kept in your own browser's local storage and never sent to the server.
how long it's kept: until it's deleted. You can delete your own expenses, settlements and any group you created at any time, and you can delete your Tab data from inside the app — open account at the bottom of the main screen and choose delete tab data when shared accounts are enabled. It asks for your password, then removes Tab data and signs you out. If you use a shared DakshHQ account, that login remains available for the other apps and you can return to an empty Tab account. No need to ask me.
one honest caveat about deletion: your name stays in groups you shared with other people, as a plain name rather than an account, and so does any balance against it. This isn't us keeping your data for our benefit — a split expense is a record of what several people agreed, and erasing your half would silently change what everyone else owes. Groups that only you were in are deleted outright along with the account.
who this isn't for: tab isn't intended for children under 13.
tab is provided as-is, run by one person as a personal project, with no uptime guarantee and no warranty. Please don't use it for anything you can't afford to lose, and don't treat it as a financial record you'd need to defend to anyone.
it is not a payment service. tab records what people owe each other. It never moves money, holds money, or connects to a bank, a card or a UPI app. Settling up happens between you and the other person however you already do it — tab only writes down that it happened.
the numbers are only as good as what's entered. The splitting maths is careful and tested, but tab can't know whether someone typed the wrong amount or forgot an expense. If a balance looks wrong, check the history — every expense and payment is listed with who added it.
This service may change or shut down at any time — it's a hobby project, not a company. If it's ever shutting down for good, I'll give notice on the site first so you can copy out anything you still need.
